14th meeting of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) - COP14
On 30 August 2018, the ENVI Committee will consider the above draft motion for resolution. The CBD has three main goals including the conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable use of the components of biological diversity, and the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising from genetic resources. The Conference of the Parties (COP) is the CBD governing body and its 14th meeting will be held in Sharm-el-Sheikh, Egypt, from 17 to 29 November 2018.
The COP14 will mainly focus on the mainstreaming of biodiversity in mining, energy, infrastructure, industry and health, and on the process preparing the follow-up to the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity. Other issues relate to the implementation of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020. In this context, the co-authors ask the Commission and the Council to provide information on what actions are planned to achieve the 2011-2020 Strategic Plan targets, and whether they intend to propose a stronger implementation mechanism for the post-2020 framework. In addition, they ask the Council whether it will actively support the establishment of new financing instruments for biodiversity and ecosystem conservation and an internal and external tracking mechanism for biodiversity financing.
