Historical analysis shows that recent flooding in Europe is exceptional and may be related to climate change
Researchers have analysed nearly 10 000 river floods in Europe in the past 500
years and have shown that recent patterns of flooding are exceptional in extent.
In addition, previous flood-rich periods are often linked to cooler average
temperatures, but today's flooding takes place in the context of warmer air and
ocean temperatures. The findings showed that flooding has been extreme in terms
of extent, air temperatures and season.
