The Greek State recognizing the exceptional palaeontological and geological
value of the Petrified forest of Lesbos has considered it as a unique natural
monument. In order to protect the Petrified forest and ensure its proper
management five terrestrial and marine areas, with fossil accumulations as well
as all the isolated fossils within the area of 37.50 acrew, were declared as
Protected Natural Monument with a special Presidential Degree (No 443 /1985).
The need for further research and protection of the fossils led to the
establishment of the Natural History Mouseum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest .The
Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest was established in 1994 to
study, research, promote, preserve and conserve the unique Petrified Forest of
Lesvos, a designated Protected Natural Monument. Located in picturesque Sigri on
the Western shores of Lesvos, the Museum functions under the auspices of the
Ministry of Culture and was established with Greek state and Eu Second Community
Support Framework funds. Exhibit: The Petrified Forest of Lesvos – Unique finds
from excavations conducted on Western Lesvos – Exhibits of rare petrified trunk
sections, fossilized branches, roots, leaves and fruits from the trees of the
rich forests of Aegis 20 million years ago. Audio visual presentation of the
wealth of the Petrified Forest its creation and the volcanoes of Lesvos.
Biodiversity of the Northern Aegean – A Journey through today’s ecosystems and
the wonderful natural wealth of the northern Aegean islands with the scientific
support of the Department of Environmental Sciences of the University of the
Aegean. Summer Events : Temporary Exhibits – Photography Exhibition – Musical
Events – Lectures – Screenings – Conferences – Scientific Meetings – Book
Presentations. Conference Center with simultaneous interpretation equipment.
Museum Shop, Fossil replicas, souvenirs, bookshop. The Museum Café with a
wonderful view of the endless azure of the Aegean. Relax, have a cup of coffee,
fruit juice or taste homemade delights of Lesvos’ traditional cuisine. Afternoon
or early evening watch the magical sunset from the museum balcony in this unique
natural environment.The Museum is directed by a seven-member Board and it's
Director. It is conspired by two main exhibition sectors, the palaeontological -
paleobotanic one and the geological one, entitled «the evolution of the Aegean
sea and the creation of the Petrified Forest». The current ecosystems in the
Aegean area are on display in the Multy-media room. The Museum is housed in a
single-flored stone-made building, and covers 1570 square meters. It includes
exhibition rooms, a seminar room, and laboratories for scientific research. The
recently established Natural History Museum of Lesvos Petrified Forest,
therefore, has the potential to be a center of palaeontological and other
scientific research. Further research in the Petrified Forest will provide new
data concerning the stratigraphy, palaeoecology, palaeoclimatology, and
palaeogeography of the South-East Mediterranean area, at the Crossroad of Europe
